How did this retreat start?

This project began as a collaboration in 2012 that led to the book Making and Being (Distributed Art Publishers, 2019) and has transformed into a living-working site for chosen family and aligned colleagues. We are inspired by the Hayama Residency in Japan and wanted to offer something similar in the Hudson Valley.

Who is this for?

People who value tranquility, quiet, and compassion. We invite academics, artists, ecologists, and social impact investors to apply for self-directed creative retreats. Anyone over 21 years old, working in any medium—based anywhere in the world, regardless of race, gender, culture, or religion—is eligible to apply.

No. You are not required to make a project during the retreat. You can use the time in the best way that you see fit. We recommend rest, research, and reflection.

What should residents expect?

If selected by us, alongside our Local Faculty Advisors, you will receive a residency in our live/work space that includes an indoor garden, a private bedroom with a king bed, a shared bathroom in Susan and Stephen’s home, and optional visits with people who can propel your vision forward. We do not provide art materials or personal electronics, computers, or cell phones.

What is the neighborhood like?

Kingston is a city in Ulster County in upstate New York. We are located in the uptown area with residential neighbors, a land trust, a worker cooperative developer, restaurants, and coffee shops around the corner. Sojourner Truth State Park is a ten minute drive from us, with great hiking and a quarry-fed public swimming hole. You can walk to the Farmer’s Market in 5 minutes or drive ten minutes to Big Deep, the Ashokan Rail Trail, and more. While we are located in upstate New York, it is important to note that this retreat is in the heart of an urban area, and has very little outdoor space. People who love our retreat come to us for the calm energy of our interior space and the indoor garden.

May I alter the space?

No. The space took over three-years to build and we offer it as it is.

May I smoke?

No. We are sensitive to smoke, scents, and smells.

Can I bring my pet with me?

Unfortunately, no. We have a cat and dog allergy.

Can I bring my partner or kids with me?

Unfortunately, no. We may allow a partner or collaborator, so long as they are 21 years or older and are open to sharing your bedroom, on a case-by-case basis.

Do I need to buy my own food?

Yes. Residents are expected to purchase or prepare their own meals during their stay. There are several nearby supermarkets, restaurants, and cafes that offer a wide variety of food options.

What is your drug and alcohol policy?

It is the policy of Retreat to be a drug-free environment. We also ask that residents consume alcohol responsibly.
